NEW YORK – The FIFA World Cup 2026 has opened with unprecedented momentum both in stadiums and on screens, setting new benchmarks for global sports broadcasting.

Across the three host nations, early matches have already drawn record-breaking television audiences, reflecting the growing scale of the tournament’s reach. More than one million fans have attended matches in person so far, while tens of millions have followed the action from home across North America.

The combined viewing figures underline the strong regional engagement as Canada, Mexico and the United States jointly host football’s biggest competition. Early data suggests the tournament is on course to redefine broadcast standards for international sport.

United States

The United States recorded its highest-ever FIFA World Cup television and streaming figures during its opening match against Paraguay, which attracted an average audience of 27.5 million viewers across FOX and Telemundo. It marked the most-watched FIFA World Cup™ match ever broadcast in the country, driven by strong linear television and digital streaming performance.

FOX achieved the most-watched English-language World Cup match in US broadcasting history, alongside the most-streamed English-language US Men’s National Team fixture in tournament play. Telemundo also set a new benchmark, delivering the most-watched US Men’s National Team World Cup match in Spanish-language television history.

The combined performance highlights the depth of audience engagement across multiple platforms, with both traditional broadcasting and streaming services contributing to record totals.

Mexico

Mexico’s opening victory over South Africa delivered one of the strongest national viewing figures of the tournament so far, with an average audience of 23.4 million viewers. The match became Mexico’s most-watched FIFA World Cup™ game of the 21st century, reflecting sustained national interest in El Tri’s campaign. It also achieved a remarkable 72.1 percent television market share, meaning nearly three out of every four viewers were tuned in during the live broadcast.

In addition, the fixture attracted around 20 million viewers in the United States, underlining cross-border interest among Mexican audiences abroad. Telemundo registered its highest-ever Spanish-language World Cup opening match audience in the US, reinforcing the match’s strong regional and international appeal.

Canada

Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded an average audience of 3.1 million viewers across English and French-language broadcasters. The fixture became the third most-watched FIFA World Cup™ match involving the Canadian men’s national team in the 21st century, signalling significant domestic interest as the nation begins its campaign on home soil.

Viewership figures were spread across multiple networks, reflecting bilingual coverage and broad national reach. The strong turnout adds to the growing broadcast momentum across North America, as all three host nations continue to generate substantial television audiences during the early stages of the tournament.
